Community / support / Proton Drive on Debian: "Starting Sync", "Sync is already running" alternating log messages
Avatar
Hello, I am running Debian and want to sync my files to proton drive. I have 3 folders in my home directory that I want to save to the drive. First of all, I don't really understand why there are two "destination paths", maybe due to the fact that I reinstalled the s3drive app several times? Second, the W endpoint syncs successfully, no problems at all. However the D endpoint seems to hang, and when I look at the logs, I see:
created_at,level,context,message,stacktrace 2025-08-30 18:19:03.328,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Sync is already running","" 2025-08-30 18:19:03.328,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Starting sync","" 2025-08-30 18:19:03.298,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Sync is already running","" 2025-08-30 18:19:03.298,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Starting sync","" 2025-08-30 18:19:03.254,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Sync is already running","" 2025-08-30 18:19:03.254,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Starting sync","" 2025-08-30 18:19:03.226,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Sync is already running","" 2025-08-30 18:19:03.226,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Starting sync","" 2025-08-30 18:19:03.189,INFO,"sync-d52fdd982c","Sync is already running",""
It goes on and on like that. The main difference between the two is that the W endpoint was empty on the drive whereas the D one was already pretty much fully synced (from a different upload). Both are configured to sync files from my /home directory and both are in "Copy" mode. Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks for your message.

It looks like you've configured Proton Drive for the 2nd time, whilst it was already configured and available in the Profiles screen. Would that be correct? You can delete one or the other entry, but choose one which has least amount of configuration done. E.g. if you delete first entry, but actually you have sync entries that are connected to it, you will need to reconfigure sync in order to select second Proton entry.
Second, the W endpoint syncs successfully, no problems at all. However the D endpoint seems to hang, and when I look at the logs, I see:
What's W and D? Do you refer to these two separate Proton configuration entries which point to the same Proton account?

They're just folders that I'm syncing from my computer to my proton drive instance. I masked the full names because I'm a little privacy nerd. But yes essentially I configured s3drive to copy every file that I have in my computer's W and D folders (located at /home/user/W and /home/user/D) to their corresponding folders in proton drive.

Yes I probably did, I'll try removing the useless entry.

Hi @dvr, I am not 100% sure, but these entries: Starting sync and Sync is already running might come from the file watcher, so if you add/edit/delete files in a directory that's being synced that triggers the sync starts, but since it's already running, simply the sync start is being ignored. If you don't need File watcher which to this day is somewhat experimental (it won't capture 100% of changes in real-time and still relies on next time when sync is called, every 8h by default).

Okay so I disabled the File Watcher. However I still get a lot of errors and my folders still cannot sync: Also sometimes I get the error:
Last error: a draft exist - usually this means a file is being uploaded at another client, or, there was a failed upload attempt. Can use --protondrive-replace-existing-draft=true to temporarily override the existing draft
How can I program my profile/sync to replace drafts?
