Although as a horribly poor person, I admit I do wish background sync didn't have to be a paid feature 🤣 at least the monthly sub is affordable

Given your very useful feedback so far, we would be willing to extend your sub by a year free of charge, so you don't need to worry about costs. Do you have an S3Drive account? Easiest for us is to assign a license to an account by e-mail. (edited)

I currently don't, I set up the app originally in a rush so I'm using it account-less, with an API key to Backblaze, with a Google Play subscription for the billing

Let me check if we can get you some coupon code that would give you one year, over Google Play, I need to confirm that with the team, as I am quite useless when it comes to navigating through tons of these payment options.

I'm not particularly hard set on continuing that way though, I can probably make an account and let you know the details? I don't really think it changes anything for me given I don't plan to use the S3Drive storage much if at all

If anything, I don't particularly love having to use Play anyway... and their 30% or whatever cut of payments to devs is eugh

You don't need to use S3Drive storage at all, it's optional. An account was just an option for us to have some independence over official channels... and payment unification across all platforms. Anyway, we'll keep our promise one way or another. I'll get back to you once I sort something out with the Google Play.

We've never tried to be honest. We do allow to select: "Custom path" (manually typed) in the Sync tool which we've removed in the yet unreleased 1.16.2 in favor of the new file picker. Perhaps you can try using that: "Custom path" and see if you can copy these folders out of your device using Sync, if that works, then we will keep: "Custom path" feature or provide some buttons to preselect some "common" paths.

Did some testing - the app doesn't account for this being a possible event, so it doesn't work properly for normally inaccessible folders (ie root-level folders like /data/ or /system/). Regardless of whether superuser has been granted to it or not, the "Save" /"OK" button to add the sync just does nothing and keeps the menu up. If you exit the app and go back in it will show it as an added sync, but it will show "Next try due now" and if you try to run or stop it it's just permanently stuck on "Stopped" and refuses to run. Presumably because there's no error handling coded in for inaccessible root-tier dirs so it just hangs.
5:13 PM
Not a big deal for me, kind of expected it to bug out - was just curious if it's possible to actually get it to do a "full system" NANDroid-style backup like Titanium Backup used to back in the day but to a cloud

We would be willing to test that our ourselves, unfortunately we can't dedicate lots of resources to that at the moment. Given that we have no experience with rooted phones, what would be the reasonable path forwards? Which model shall we get and what ROM to install for easiest experience? We need to run test version on that phone, that's way I ask. We can make notes ahead, prepare things and get to this once we have some free time. (edited)

Oh, no worries, I figured there would be little user demand! It's a niche thing for sure, although I think having support for it could capture you some of the rooted device community which tend to have really strong allegiance to useful apps that work "better" with root. So ya know, more sales :) If you're willing to put dev time into it, I'd say the easiest way to test this would be with a PC-based emulator/Android VM, given costs and whatnot. Would probably test for AOSP, and these days the root method is either Magisk or KernelSU/KernelSU Next or APatch. Although which one it is shouldn't affect anything. If you needed a physical device, https://github.com/zenfyrdev/bootloader-unlock-wall-of-shame has a good list of which to go by, note that the "Just terrible" section is bootloader locked phones but "Avoid at all costs" just means the bootloader unlock process is hard. On Android usually Recent album contained all user's photos and other folders were available in the horizontal selector. We could add Select all, but I am not sure wouldn't it lead to some duplication given the fact that we keep folder-structure? The alternative would be to allow using approach that we've used in the past. Deduplicate photos from all selected folders and upload to a single location.

Alas, I do not believe I have a "Recent" folder/album
5:36 PM
I don't use it anymore, but Google Photos is designed to basically do every photo on your device and scan for new ones every now and then. It's pretty rare you'd need to manually add photos to it. So an option to use it that way would be good
5:38 PM
My approach of setting up syncs for the 3 media folders themselves works, but I don't think it's as efficient - in theory that's designed for general files rather than media specifically and I'm guessing the Media Backup uses a different API /method of scanning for the data that's more efficient for that use case

Well yes, because Sync needs to scan folders every time and then verify it with the remote, something that Media Backup doesn't need to do. We'll be improving Media Backup gradually in next releases. Some improvements are scheduled in a 1.16.2 release in a few days, but Select all and rest would have to wait slightly longer.

Hey Tom, I was wondering, would S3Drive support selective sync? What I mean by "selective sync" is that files from end-user devices would automatically sync to the remote, but the user can choose to keep certain files on remote only, something like what Dropbox or OneDrive could do. Or alternatively, Device A could sync up all its files (e.g., photos), but they do not automatically download on Device B unless the user wants the file. In other words, the "files" are on Device B but as placeholders. When accessed, the files are retrieved from the remote location. Also, if the user is running out of space on a device or has a cron job to clean up rarely accessed files, the app could look at the files that have the furthest atime and replace them with placeholders.

You can already do that with the current options. Just create a separate folder on your phone and create a Move sync job to upload those files and have them deleted on your device.

True, it's not entirely a 1-1 solution, but you can still get far with the existing functionality, if you're okay with this sync approach

Is there a way to disable HTTP/2 for rclone (or is it already disabled)? Thinking I might be running into https://github.com/rclone/rclone/issues/8379 given how slow some of my uploads are going (and because I'm using a provider that is known to be affected by this issue).
What is your current rclone version (output from rclone version)? rclone v1.68.2 - os/version: centos 7.9.2009 (64 bit) - os/kernel: 3.10.0-1160.105.1.el7.x86_64 (x86_64) - os/type: linux - os/arch...

Note that the linked issue is for downloads, but the same problem applies to uploads (basically combining everything into one TCP connection, defeating the purpose of concurrent uploads/downloads) (edited)

On what platform are you getting this error? OneDrive has lots of gotchas depending on the account type. You can try connecting to OneDrive using: rclone config command on your desktop. Rclone installation will be required prior to that: https://rclone.org/install/ Once you're done, config will be automatically visible on desktop. You can also export this config and import to other device, mobile or other PC.
I am on Linux Aurora - a Fedora Silverblue derivative. I am trying to connect to any OneDrive account. It sounds like I should auth with rclone first? I already have rclone on my desktop machine and I auth'ed before I purchased s3drtive and it worked. I deleted the config before I installed s3drive. Should I reauth using rclone and then put that config somewhere?

Hi, Do you refer to drag&drop feature? It should handle multiple files just fine, but once you drag over S3Drive window then it would upload files to the depth you're currently viewing regardless if you drop it over folder or not. In the future we'll allow drag&drop to recognize folder entries.

In principle you can connect to OneDrive from S3Drive itself. It uses default settings which are suitable for most accounts. Some OneDrive accounts may require custom config. In such case you can install Rclone on your desktop, configure OneDrive using rclone config which would walk you through the interactive setup process: https://rclone.org/onedrive/ You can then extract config using: rclone config dump or manually copy it out from Rclone config .ini file (use rclone config file to get the location) and import it to S3Drive using blue: Custom provider button.

Hi, I didn't have chance to try and understand what Dropbox or OneDrive does in particular, but...
What I mean by "selective sync" is that files from end-user devices would automatically sync to the remote, but the user can choose to keep certain files on remote only,
You can configure multiple Sync jobs with different modes. E.g. if you want keep folder A both locally and on remote then you use mode Sync, however if you want to sync to remote and have it removed from local then you use mode Move.
Or alternatively, Device A could sync up all its files (e.g., photos), but they do not automatically download on Device B unless the user wants the file.
That's in principle what S3Drive does. If you sync files from Device A to remote, then when you open S3Drive on Device B, then S3Drive will only download files that you view, preview, download either by using S3Drive UI or e.g. Mount (on desktop or mobile). In other words, remote files are accessed through Device B on-demand.
. Also, if the user is running out of space on a device or has a cron job to clean up rarely accessed files, the app could look at the files that have the furthest atime and replace them with placeholders.
I believe you refer to disk/drive mount, is that right? Our mount works slightly differently as you describe, because it uses FUSE instead of physical files. Basically each file is a placeholder, but some of them might point to a valid VFS cache (e.g. if you accessed that file shortly before), hence they might be served locally. We provide some default for VFS https://rclone.org/commands/rclone_mount/#vfs-file-caching which should work in most basic cases, however as such it's possible to tweak it further.
Mount the remote as file system on a mountpoint.

Hi, I just downloaded and installed the free version of S3Drive to get a feel if it would suit my needs. I did the same thing with Proton Drive since the two are supposed to be ablte to talk to each other. I see the content of my Proton Drive, but I can't upload. Is this a limitation of the free version of either app or is something else amiss? I am looking for an alternative for OneDrive and the whole Proton package (VPN, Authenticator, Drive, Password Manager etc) is very alluring, but only if it... you know works.

Hi, There is an ongoing issue with Proton Drive integration, more on that here: https://discord.com/channels/1069654792902815845/1439291300636655646 and https://github.com/rclone/rclone/issues/8873 Having said that, some brave user implemented fix for that which awaits Rclone maintainer approval: https://github.com/rclone/rclone/issues/8870 https://github.com/rclone/rclone/pull/9081 Can't say how long will it take to be included by S3Drive, but it's possible this issue will be fixed soon. Proton Drive also promised to provide an update regarding their SDK in January 2026: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonDrive/comments/1p79grt/comment/nqwlcqb/ not sure whether that's going to be "big release" or only annoucement.

It still isn't working, right?

Took us a while, but we wouldn’t be able to have it fixed without your invaluable feedback, thanks! cc @FunnyMarty

Hi, thanks for your report. Does it happen immediately when you visit a a folder or perhaps at some point when browsing share? I am trying to find some ways to reproduce it.

I help teams design and build serious DeFi infrastructure, not just UI wrappers. My experience includes AMM mechanics, ZK proof integrations, and scaling solutions like zkSync. I’ve worked on projects spanning Algorand, EOS, and Cosmos-based networks. From Anchor programs to advanced token economics, I focus on systems that remain stable under real liquidity pressure. I regularly build bots for trading, monitoring, and automation tied directly into smart contracts. Whether you’re launching a new protocol or optimizing an existing one, I bring both engineering depth and market awareness. If you’re hiring devs who understand liquidity and risk, I’m open to collaboration.

I’m a full-stack engineer, which in 2026 is just a fancy way of saying "the person who cleans up after the LLM." We’re living in an era where people ship "agentic workflows" that are held together by vibes and a prayer. I’m the person who builds the actual plumbing. I handle the full lifecycle from optimizing Weaviate/Pinecone hybrid searches so the AI actually knows what it's talking about, to building FastAPI backends that keep the logic from collapsing. I’d rather spend my weekend perfecting a clean architecture than shipping a "shiny" demo that breaks the moment a user asks a difficult question. I prioritize technical rigor over "shipping fast," because "shipping fast" is usually how you end up with an AI that accidentally insults your best customer. If you’re building serious infrastructure and need someone who values security over hype, I’m your human. One more thing: I'm always cheerful, funny and optimistic.

Hi, not sure you'll find anyone who's hiring here and this isn't really the place but I like your presentation. It's quite funny and realistic, which is oddly opposed to your status / user profile that's nothing but a buzzwords salad in comparison.
